Yoon Bok Hee (1946)

Yoon Bok Gi, known professionally as Yoon Bok Hee, is a South Korean singer-songwriter and musical actress. She graduated from the Hanyang University College of Education Affiliated High School and later attended Seorabeol Arts University but dropped out of their Dance program. She debuted in 1952, at age six, with the Nak-Rang Music Troupe in the Joong-Ang Theatre in a small role in the musical “Christmas Gift”. She was the leader of the girl group Korean Kittens who became internationally well-known after an appearance at the BBC show “Tonight” in London where they performed “Can’t Buy Me Love” from The Beatles. She later met musician Louis Armstrong and thanks to him, she traveled extensively as a through Asia and the United States in the 1960s, was also part of comedian and host Bob Hope’s tour to visit American soldiers in Vietnam during the war, and even was a regular guest in Las Vegas until 1976. She made her official debut as a singer in 1967 with the song “Despite the Sweet Smiley Face” and was the first star to wear a mini-skirt in public in South Korea at a time when society thought it was an immoral piece of clothing.
